Everyone would surely agree that having some form of antivirus is absolutely essential in order to protect our computers. These days, everyone from small children to grandparents are using the internet. The more any of us are online, the greater the chance of us coming across the potential to have our computers infected by a malicious virus.

There are several popular products that you should consider and if you don’t know much about which antivirus to get, you should do a little research. Try to stick to name brands like McAfee or Norton Antivirus. There are others that are excellent too like Kapersky but many people have never heard of them.

There are two ways to install the antivirus program on your computer. One is the purchase a disc at your local computer store. The other alternative is the internet. You can of course purchase antivirus software online and receive the disc to install or simply sign up to the online service and let all the protection happen online, ie no disc to install or configure.

Viruses and malware, as well as other malicious programs can cause a lot of havoc to your computer and possibly your life. These viruses can cause your computer to slow down, or simply shut down. Your internet browser could default to any webpage the virus creators decide or even worse, something called keylogging could occur where all of your keystrokes are recorded thus people could have access to your bank details when you login.

The reality today is you need to protect your computer and the best way to do so is with a secured, reputable antivirus software.

It’s amazing the speed at which computer and internet technologies evolve. Unfortunately, as the internet becomes faster and more innovative, so do the rate of viruses on the web making our normal experiences online require the need for antivirus software. Creators of these virus programs are quite clever and there are times where our normal software misses these threats. Sometimes viruses are passed down to our computers after we’ve downloaded a file after we’ve already come off the internet and when we go to open that file a virus stealthily infects our computer.

Having a reliable and up-to-date, state of the art antivirus software is essential to protecting our computers. You can purchase your antivirus software online through companies such as Norton Antivirus, McAfee to name a couple. Or you can purchase the software at a shop like PC World and install the software yourself. Either way, these antivirus software companies will need access to your computer through an internet connection so it can keep your computer safe 24 hours per day.

The antivirus software will scan your computer looking for malicious files or code and attempt to quarntine anything it feels could harm your computer.

Your firewall also helps protect your computer from virus intrusions. It won’t remove any viruses but it can recognise the behaviour normally associated with virus attempts through ports coming in and going out from your computer.

Even if you only use your computer sparingly, you’ll want to have some form of antivirus software to protect your computer and it’s files from damage or worse.
